BREAKING NEWS: WWE Announces Status of Daniel Bryan for Extreme Rules

Rumors have been flying all week about Daniel Bryan’s injury, and what his status actually is for Extreme Rules. He’s been slated for weeks to face Bad News Barrett in an Intercontinental Championship rematch.

And, unfortunately, it looks like the rumors are true: WWE.com has just announced Daniel Bryan is OUT for tonight’s Extreme Rules show on the WWE Network. Instead, fans will be treated to Neville vs Bad News Barrett in a pre-show match. Bryan has been hurting for weeks from what looks like a neck injury – he was actually pulled from the post-Wrestlemania European tour in the middle of April and hasn’t competed since. At the time, fans hoped it was just a precautionary measure. This no longer looks like the case.

No word yet on how this affects the status of the Intercontinental Championship. Last year, under similar circumstances, Daniel Bryan was eventually stripped of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (a title Cena won before quickly losing to Brock Lesnar), and Bryan returned to much fanfare despite not winning the Royal Rumble… or ever getting his title rematch.

But no need to fret! Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett have already fought a number of times, including a fantastic Extreme Rules-worthy cage match on Smackdown from just a few years ago:

Does that help soften the blow any? No, didn’t think so.
