The big news coming out of NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable is the debut of Samoa Joe. The ex-TNA and ROH star confronted NXT Champion Kevin Owens after the main-event brawl with Sami Zayn. (If you missed it, catch up with Between the Rope’s NXT TakeOver recap and post-game analysis.)
What those of us watching on the WWE Network didn’t get to see was Joe’s first in-ring interview. Lucky for us, WWE posted the interview on YouTube.
Before the white-hot crowd, Joe says he’s always sought out the best competition in the world and that’s why we’re seeing him in NXT. If that wasn’t enough Joe, WWE also posted this backstage interview with Renee Young.
In the interview, Joe says he should have been in
WWE NXT all along, and he also talks about his history with Owens and Zayn.
“Kevin Owens, I’m coming for what you have,” Joe tells Young in the video. Obviously, that’s the NXT Championship.
The timing of Joe’s jump couldn’t be better with the news that Destination America may be canceling TNA’s Impact Wrestling. It also reveals a shift in WWE’s view of former TNA talent. Where once ex-TNA roster members appeared to be off-limits, that’s clearly no longer the case. So maybe there is hope for guys like Ethan Carter III, James Storm and Bobby Roode should TNA fold.
Maybe even more of a shift is that Samoa Joe was allowed to keep the name he established in TNA, ROH and around the globe. We’ll definitely know more after the NXT TV tapings.
